The Significance of Jesus as the Lamb of God

The Significance of Jesus as the Lamb of God

We see in the Bible where John the Baptist was baptizing in the Jordan River when he looked and saw Jesus Christ coming toward him. John 1:29 gives us the account of this where it says, “The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.” What did John mean by his statement?

Someone or something has to die because of the sin of man.

In the Old Testament, a lamb had to be sacrificed to cover the sins of the people. Since the sacrifice only covered the sin and did not pay for the sin, the sacrifice had to be repeated over and over because it was not perfect and could not pay the full price of the penalty of sin. The first part of Romans 6:23 states, “For the wages of sin is death,”. That means someone or something has to die because of the sin of man. Since all have sinned and come short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23), there must be a death to cover the sin. That Sacrificial Lamb was the one that had to die to cover man’s sin.

Jesus was that sacrifice, sent by God.

When John the Baptist saw Jesus Christ, he recognized that Jesus was that sacrifice, sent by God, to pay the full price of man’s sin (Romans 5:8). Therefore, John said, “Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world”. The Bible also says in the last part of Romans 6:23, “but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord”. Have you received the gift of God? Do you know Jesus Christ as your Saviour?

We as Christians are called to point the world to Christ. What better way than by quoting John the Baptist, the forerunner of Jesus Christ - "Behold the Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world."
