Understanding the Greatness of the Lord

Understanding the Greatness of the Lord

The Bible says in Psalm 48:1, “Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, in the mountain of his holiness.” This verse is also part of a song sung by children in some churches. It reminds children, and hopefully adults too, of the greatness and majesty of the Lord God. However, some may ask what makes the Lord so great.

God created everything from nothing.

Since God has revealed himself to man in His creation and in His Word, the Bible, let’s look at a few reasons in the Bible for this answer. First, we look at Genesis 1:1, ‘In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth.” Before anyone or anything existed, God was. God created all of creation when there was nothing. No man can create something out of nothing. God is great!

Next, we see that Isaiah 40:12 says, “and meted out heaven with the span,”. Here we see that the Lord measured the expanse of heaven with the distance between the tip of His little finger and the tip of His thumb or a measurement often referred to as a span. How great God is!

What a great God!

Finally, we see in 2 Corinthians 5:21, “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” Jesus, the Son of God, took the sin of all people (past, present and future) upon Himself that we might receive His righteousness. What a great God! He paid for our sin when we could not.

Therefore, God deserves all our praise because He is great, and He loves us with such a great love. To God be the glory!

As David wrote in Psalm 8, "When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers", I am humbled by the greatness and grandeur of our God. He is Lord of all, and yet He desires to spend time with us.
